2003-09-13 - 1:26 p.m. What to say about our show last night? I like to keep things positive, so I'll start there. We played for a large crowd, although only a handful of people were actually paying attention. We kept our focus on them. We did an experimental set, keeping our songs slow and easy and relaxed. I really enjoyed what Jason was doing on drums and Jeni's melodica was just gorgeous behind the melodies. I was really happy with how our set turned out. Casey's back-up vocals, which included more singing than I thought she was planning on, were just beautiful. She has really added a texture to the songs which was deeply needed. I am really proud of what we have been doing. Loner Getaway Car played after us and they totally blew me away. I thought they were a lot of fun. they had three guitarists which is usually a death trap, but they pulled it off with elegance. Each guit had it's own place in each song and i couldn't imagine them without. Nell, one of their two singers, reminded me a lot of the Cannanes in her vocal delivery. (On a side note, she gave me perhaps one of the best compliments on my vocals ever, saying I reminded her of Yo La Tengo's earlier stuff! Thanks!) Their other singer wasn't quite loud enough, but with such soaring music, I really didn't mind. They are a band on the move and I look forward to experiencing them again. Well worth the whole evening just to see them perform. I'd like to thank Alex yet again for inviting us to play and for setting up these shows. He is doing Portland a huge service by making these shows happen. Next up, Seattle and our Shalimar One Show Tour! with Ross Beach & the Hellpets and Vegas In Flames. Hope to see you there! Jack
